Exile Talks Dortmund: Repression, Resistance & the Fight for Free Media in the South Caucasus
How Does Independent Journalism Survive Under Authoritarian Rule?
In Azerbaijan, President Ilham Aliyev’s authoritarian regime has spent years dismantling free media. Today, more than 25 journalists are imprisoned, and all independent outlets are forced to operate from exile.
In neighboring Georgia, once known for its relatively pluralistic media landscape, press freedom is now under mounting pressure from the increasingly autocratic Georgian Dream government.
Journalist Fatima Karimova (Mikroskop Media, Azerbaijan) and activist Gaga Gogoladze (GZA – Georgisches Zentrum im Ausland) will discuss how war, censorship, and repressive laws shape their daily work. Together, they’ll explore how Azerbaijan’s media climate deteriorated after the Karabakh war, and why Georgia’s independent media now faces similar threats amid recent legal and political changes.
