Exile Talks: Belarusian Exile Media on Another Sham Election I 21.01.2025 I 7pm

Four and a half years after the fraudulent 2020 presidential elections and the mass protests, Belarus is again heading toward a so-called “election”. The situation for press freedom has dramatically worsened since then: 45 journalists are currently imprisoned, 400-500 journalists were forced to leave Belarus, critical media outlets were labeled as “extremist organizations,” with staff persecuted and jailed. 30 media outlets have transferred their entities into exile. In other words: Independent reporting within the country is virtually impossible.
In this context, fostering a free and independent public sphere can only take place from exile. In this event, we will speak with two Belarusian journalists reporting from European exile to discuss the upcoming "elections", the current situation in Belarus, the challenges of exile journalism and the importance of free information in an authoritarian environment.
