Exile Talks: Reporting on and from Ukraine
April 1st, 19h, in Berlin - moderated by Emma Thomasson
For three years, Ukrainian journalists have been operating under extreme conditions: covering the Russian invasion, facing targeted attacks, and struggling with financial uncertainty. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, 13 journalists have been killed, 47 wounded, and 18 Ukrainian journalists remain imprisoned in Russia (Reporters without Borders/Institute of Mass Information). Despite these immense challenges, independent media in Ukraine continue to report, countering disinformation and ensuring that the voices of millions—both within Ukraine and abroad—are heard.
Award-winning journalists Katerina Sergatskova and Roman Stepanovych, co-founders of Zaborona Media and the 2402 Foundation, will share their firsthand experiences.
Discussion Topics
* How do media organizations adapt to war, trauma, exile, and funding shortages?
* What stories are being told—and which ones are at risk of being lost?
* What kind of support do Ukrainian journalists need?
* And how should Europe support independent Ukrainian journalism in these times of crisis?
This urgent conversation will be moderated by Emma Thomasson, a Berlin-based British journalist, media consultant, and trainer who has worked extensively with exile journalists on newsroom strategy, leadership and mental health.
Join us for an evening of in-depth insights into the resilience of Ukrainian journalism in wartime.
This event is part of the monthly “Exile Talks” series, which brings the expertise and experiences of exiled journalists and media professionals to the stage. The event is financially supported by Bratislava Policy Institute and ERASMUS+.
